Why become a member?

Public procurement professionals are responsible for the lofty goal of managing an ethical and transparent procurement process to support the needs of their organizations and ultimately serve their communities. To successfully meet these challenges and opportunities, state and local governments, educational institutions, non-profit organizations and associations often require successful collaborations and contractual partnerships with cooperative purchasing organizations, service providers and vendors.

 

 

Over the past decade, cooperative purchasing has created an avenue and resource for agencies to use or “piggyback” on established contracts to leverage volume spend to drive savings.  In addition, the time savings of using an already completed solicitation process and contract has been an additional benefit.   Reduced staffing and resources has limited many procurement team resources and capacity to respond as quickly as they wish to their growing customer demands. Recognized by the American Bar Association, as outlined in its Model Procurement Code for State and Local Governments, the concept of cooperative procurement is a proven, accepted means for the procurement of goods and services across the nationAs a result, public procurement professionals have begun to rely on cooperative purchasing as a tool in public contracting.

 

 

With the rapid growth of the cooperative purchasing industry, it is time for an Association to elevate the discussion on the use of cooperatives. The purpose is to work collaboratively and inclusively to promote the highest level of business ethics, best practices, and standards in cooperative procurement to serve the needs of government, education and non-profit organizations.  Part of that goal is to also develop needed training and resources to support public procurement professionals in their important roles.
